Stéphane Grappelli

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Stéphane Grappelli grew up in Paris and taught himself to play the violin. As a young musician he played in cinemas and dance orchestras. In 1934 he founded the Quintette du Hot Club de France with Django Reinhardt, in which his elegant, swinging violin counterbalanced Reinhardt's guitar. He was one of the first to make the violin sound like a fully fledged jazz instrument. When war broke out, he stayed in London, where he played with the young pianist George Shearing. After the war he occasionally played with Reinhardt again. In the 1970s he had a second career and made records with the classical violinist Yehudi Menuhin. He kept performing until shortly before his death in 1997.
