Skik

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Skik was a Dutch pop group from Erica in Drenthe, which sang mainly in Drents, a variety of Nedersaksisch (Low Saxon). Skik is Drents for 'schik', meaning fun or enjoyment. The band made its debut on 13 August 1994 at the regional-language festival Muzem in Emmen. The first line-up consisted of Daniël Lohues, Maarten van der Helm and Marlen Davers. In 1995 the first CD was released, simply called Skik, and in 1996 the group supported Bon Jovi in Enschede. That same year it received the Zilveren Harp from Conamus, a prize for promising Dutch artists.

Music and breakthrough

The national breakthrough came in 1997 with the CD Niks is zoas 't lek, with the hits Op fietse and Hoe kan dat nou. Its follow-up 's Nachts brought 't Giet zoas 't giet and Af & toe. With Overal & nergens from 2000 the group temporarily made an excursion into standard Dutch, and Ik ga als 'n speer made the chart. In 2002 it had a small hit with Henk Westbroek, Ik heb geen zin om op te staan. That same year came the CD Tof, with Dankjewel voor de zon. In 2004 the compilation Best tof was released. After that the attention shifted to Lohues, who played solo and with the Louisiana Blues Club. The group has never officially disbanded. Lohues still often closes his theatre shows with Op fietse.

Influence

The music is cheerful, guitar-driven pop with everyday subjects and a Drents dialect that sounds light. Skik belonged to the wave of regional language in Dutch pop music.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Op fietse and notice the language: the Drents sounds light and playful. Can you hear how the rhythmic guitar and the simple chorus almost let you see the bike ride?
