Daniël Lohues was born in 1971 in Emmen and grew up in Erica, in Drenthe. His father was an organist and taught him as a child to play the church organ. At thirteen he got his first guitar and started a band. In 1994 he founded Skik, a group that sang in the Drents dialect and had hits in the 1990s with Op fietse, Hoe kan dat nou? and 't Giet zoas 't giet. Skik played at Pinkpop and Lowlands in 1997 and 1998.

Music and breakthrough

In 2003 Lohues started a new band, Lohues & the Louisiana Blues Club, after recording an album in the United States with local blues musicians. A documentary about that adventure premiered at the Netherlands Film Festival, and in 2007 the band opened for The Rolling Stones. He then went solo with theatre tours such as Allennig and released an album nearly every spring. Hier kom ik weg, in 2008 the B-side of the single Baat bij muziek, grew into one of his most popular songs and has been in the Top 2000 since 2009. The album Hout moet received an Edison in 2011, and D from 2014 entered at number 1 in the Album Top 100.

Influence

Since 2002 Lohues has also written a weekly column, and he has written songs for, among others, Guus Meeuwis, Freek de Jonge and Paul de Leeuw. He is one of the best-known dialect singers in the Netherlands and contributed to the fame of the Drents dialect beyond Drenthe. In 2020 he received the Culturele prijs van Drenthe, the province's cultural prize.
