Dialect pop and rock

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Dialect pop and rock · From the 1980s more and more bands sang in their own regional language, not as a joke but to tell, close to home, about the village, the countryside and the family. Rowwen Hèze from America in northern Limburg, founded in 1985 around the singer Jack Poels, blended rock with folk and accordion. In Drenthe, Daniël Lohues sang in Drents dialect with Skik. The boerenrock of Normaal had shown that dialect could draw a large audience; in these bands the lyrics are central and the music often sounds more acoustic and more melancholy.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice how the dialect colours the sound of the singing, and the accordion and acoustic instruments alongside guitar and drums.
