Oneohtrix Point Never

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Oneohtrix Point Never, abbreviated OPN, is the artist name of Daniel Lopatin, an American electronic producer, composer, singer and songwriter, born on 25 July 1982. He grew up in Massachusetts as the son of Russian-Jewish emigrants with a musical background. His first experiments with electronics grew out of his father's record collection and his father's Roland Juno-60, a synthesizer that he inherited and used extensively in his own music. He studied at Hampshire College and then went to Brooklyn for a course in archival science at the Pratt Institute, a study that also influenced his music.

Music and breakthrough

Lopatin began in the early 2000s in the Brooklyn noise scene. He earned early praise with the synthesizer compilation Rifts from 2009 and with the influential vaporwave project Chuck Person's Eccojams Vol. 1 from 2010. His albums include Returnal in 2010, Replica in 2011, R Plus Seven in 2013, Garden of Delete in 2015, Age Of in 2018, Magic Oneohtrix Point Never in 2020, Again in 2023 and Tranquilizer in 2025. In 2013 he signed with Warp Records. His work uses samples, analogue and software synthesis and intricate MIDI production, and plays with motifs from widely differing genres and eras. He also produced for The Weeknd, Moses Sumney and Soccer Mommy, among others.

Influence

Lopatin also wrote film music, above all with the Safdie brothers for Good Time in 2017, Uncut Gems in 2019 and Marty Supreme in 2025. For Good Time he won the Soundtrack Award at the Cannes film festival. OPN shows how electronic music can connect memory, archive and pop.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a piece from Garden of Delete or Age Of and notice how synthesizer sounds and fragments of other music run together. Ask yourself what you recognise and what you cannot place.
