Zones Without People

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Zones Without People is the second studio album by Daniel Lopatin, who makes electronic music as Oneohtrix Point Never. It was released on 6 August 2009 on Arbor as a limited-edition LP. Most of the material was also on the 2009 compilation Rifts. It is an ambient album that, according to Lopatin, combines several approaches to psychedelic music.

Dreamy synthesizers with reverb build walls of sound. Format & Journey North lasts nine minutes and uses drones, pan flute and water recordings. Pitchfork found the title track beautiful but inhuman. AllMusic and Sputnikmusic gave four out of five, and according to AllMusic the album helped establish Lopatin's name for underwater synthesizers. Stereogum placed it in 2017 eighth out of nine in his discography.

Listening tip. Listen to Format & Journey North and notice the pan flute and the water recordings between the drones.
