Returnal

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Returnal is the fourth studio album by Daniel Lopatin under the name Oneohtrix Point Never, released on 22 June 2010 by Editions Mego. He recorded it with Goldwave and Multiquence, mainly in an air-conditioned room in his parents' house in Massachusetts, in July and August 2009. The first track originated in Brooklyn. Lopatin called it a Rousseau record: a world music record, but hyperreal, seen by someone who is not really in touch with the world.

It builds on his synthesizer music and adds noise and his own processed voice. Nil Admirari opens with noise, rhythm machines and screaming vocals, Describing Bodies and Stress Waves sound almost like hymns. Simon Reynolds described the closing track Preyouandi as an alien landscape of glassy percussion. The reviews were positive and Fact, The Wire and Tiny Mix Tapes named the album one of the best of 2010.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the closing track Preyouandi and notice the glassy percussion that returns in waves through echo and delay.
