R Plus Seven

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

R Plus Seven was released on 30 September 2013 and was Oneohtrix Point Never's first album on Warp Records. Daniel Lopatin worked differently from his previous record Replica, on which he processed old advertising fragments: now he used mainly the synthetic sounds of MIDI instruments, presets from the 1980s and virtual instruments. For the first time his trusty Roland Juno-60 was not heard on it. Lopatin called it a calm album, influenced by his domestic happiness. The title refers to the N+7 method of the writers' group Oulipo.

The record plays with the sounds of old samplers and with church organs and choirs from Hollywood, and sounds, according to Pitchfork, strange and yet full of feeling. Critics compared the rhythms and repetition to Philip Glass and Steve Reich. The reviews were glowing, and the album appeared on various year-end lists. Visual works by artists such as Jon Rafman and Takeshi Murata were also released.

Listening tip. Listen to Boring Angel and notice the artificial, synthetic sounds that create an atmosphere of their own, a strange one.
