Betrayed in the Octagon

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Betrayed in the Octagon is the first album that Daniel Lopatin released under the name Oneohtrix Point Never, initially as Magic Oneohtrix Point Never. It was released in 2007 on hand-numbered cassettes on the label Deception Island. Two years later a vinyl edition followed on No Fun Records, in which the opening track was dropped and a title was changed.

Lopatin recorded the album in Massachusetts with a Roland Juno-60, a Sequential Circuits Six-Trak and a Roland MSQ-700 sequencer. A reviewer at AllMusic described it as a succession of ghostly elegance and mild new age contemplation. Tracks from the album were reissued in 2009 on the compilation Rifts. The album marks the beginning of the Oneohtrix Point Never project.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Parallel Minds and notice how a small group of synthesizer sounds slowly repeats and shifts. You can hear that the music comes from just a few devices.
