Modern Talking

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Modern Talking was a German pop duo of the arranger, songwriter and producer Dieter Bohlen and the singer Thomas Anders. They began in the spring of 1983 in West Berlin. They only became really well known in early 1985 with You're My Heart, You're My Soul, which reached the top ten in at least fifteen countries and was number one in Germany for six weeks. That year You Can Win If You Want from the debut album The 1st Album followed, and then Cheri, Cheri Lady from Let's Talk About Love.

Music and breakthrough

In a short time more hits came: Brother Louie and Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. for Love) from Ready for Romance, Geronimo's Cadillac from In the Middle of Nowhere and Jet Airliner from Romantic Warriors. The music is simple and radio-oriented: a clear, light pop sound with plenty of synthesizers, with melodies you can sing along to after hearing them once. Bohlen wrote and produced, Anders sang.

Influence

After a poorly received sixth album, In the Garden of Venus, Bohlen announced the end of the project in 1987. The relationship between the two had long been strained. In 1998 they made a successful comeback with a new version of You're My Heart, You're My Soul, and released more albums until 2003, with the participation of the rapper Eric Singleton. After that they split up for good. They are regarded as the most successful German pop duo, and show how German pop music in the 1980s conquered much of Europe.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to You're My Heart, You're My Soul and notice how simply the melody and chorus are built, and how much room the synthesizers get in the sound.
