From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Dieter Bohlen is a German songwriter, producer, singer and television personality, born in 1954 and raised in East Frisia. He began writing songs while still at school. In the late 1970s he wrote for Schlager singers at the Hamburg label Intersong. After that he produced six unsuccessful German singles for Thomas Anders, and together they formed the pop duo Modern Talking in 1984.

Music and breakthrough

Modern Talking topped the German charts five times in a row, with You're My Heart, You're My Soul, You Can Win If You Want, Cheri, Cheri Lady, Brother Louie and Atlantis Is Calling (S.O.S. For Love). The duo was also successful in other European countries, in Asia and in Africa. In 1987 it broke up and Bohlen started the solo project Blue System. As a producer he wrote for others, including C. C. Catch, Chris Norman, Bonnie Tyler and Roy Black. For Chris Norman he wrote Midnight Lady in 1986, a big hit in Central Europe. For the 1989 Eurovision Song Contest he wrote Flieger for Germany and Nur ein Lied for Austria. Later he became a judge on the talent shows Deutschland sucht den Superstar and Das Supertalent.

Influence

Bohlen is above all the man behind a large part of German pop music of the 1980s, as a writer and producer for many artists at once.
