Schlager
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Schlager is the German word for a hit and became the name for melodious, sentimental popular songs in German and Dutch. In the 1950s and 1960s, the schlager dominated the German charts, with singers such as Freddy Quinn and later Udo Jürgens and Heino. Until the Neue Deutsche Welle, German-language pop music was mostly schlager, and in the Netherlands too, a Dutch lyric long sounded like schlager or cabaret almost by default.
