James Horner

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

James Horner (1953–2015) studied at the Royal College of Music in London and then in Los Angeles. He began on cheap films by the producer Roger Corman. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (1982) made him known, with romantic orchestral music full of brass fanfares. In Aliens (1986) he built tension with hard, mechanical percussion. Horner loved Celtic sounds: in Braveheart (1995) and Titanic (1997) you hear bagpipes, whistles and a wordless singing voice. Titanic won him two Oscars, for the score and for the song My Heart Will Go On. He sometimes borrowed melodies from classical works. Horner was killed in a plane crash in 2015.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the Celtic instruments, such as uilleann pipes and tin whistle, above a warm string orchestra and a floating choir.
