Sergej Prokofjev

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Sergej Prokofjev · Sergei Prokofiev was born in 1891 in what is now Ukraine and studied at the conservatory in Saint Petersburg. After years in the West he returned to the Soviet Union in the 1930s. His first film score, Poruchik Kizhe (1934), belongs to a satire; the suite from it, with the well-known 'Troika', became a concert classic. He worked closely with the director Sergei Eisenstein. For Aleksandr Nevski (1938) they carefully matched image and music to each other; sometimes Prokofiev wrote the music first and Eisenstein edited to it. The Battle on the Ice is the most famous example of this. They also made Ivan Grozny (1944) together. Prokofiev himself turned Nevski into a cantata.

Listening

Listening tip. Notice how chorus, brass and percussion in the Battle on the Ice build a movement from silence to chaos, exactly to the rhythm of the editing.
