Alan Silvestri

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Alan Silvestri (born in New York in 1950) began as a jazz guitarist and in the 1970s wrote music for the police series CHiPs. Robert Zemeckis asked him for Romancing the Stone (1984), and afterwards for almost all of his films. In Back to the Future (1985) a large orchestra is heard with a heroic brass fanfare, which gives the journey through time an adventurous feel. Predator (1987), by contrast, has hard, rhythmic percussion. For Forrest Gump (1994) he wrote a simple piano theme that goes with the floating feather. Later he became the composer of the big Avengers films, such as Avengers: Endgame (2019).

Listening

Listening tip. Notice the broad brass fanfares and the fast, driving strings that propel the action forward.
