Jakob Lindberg

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Jakob Lindberg is a Swedish lutenist. He was born on 16 October 1952 in Djursholm. His first inspiration was the music of The Beatles and he began with guitar. At fourteen he was taught by Jörgen Rörby, who also introduced him to the lute. He studied music at the University of Stockholm and then at the Royal College of Music in London, with Diana Poulton for lute and Carlos Bonell for classical guitar. There he chose Renaissance and Baroque music on historical instruments.

Music and breakthrough

In 1979 he became lute teacher at the Royal College of Music, succeeding Poulton. He plays solo and in small and large ensembles and also directs operas, with instruments from the lute and guitar families. He recorded music that had never been recorded before, mainly for the label BIS. Among it are Italian chitarrone collections, music by Scottish composers, work by Bach and the first ever recording of the complete solo lute music of John Dowland. In 1985 he founded the Dowland Consort, which plays music from the time of Elizabeth and James, in particular by Dowland and Sylvius Leopold Weiss. As a continuo player on theorbo, chitarrone and archlute he played with ensembles such as The English Concert and the Orchestra of the Age of Enlightenment.

Influence

For his recordings he uses a lute by Sixtus Rauwolf of Augsburg from around 1590, possibly the oldest lute in the world that can still be played. In 1983 he played the lute himself in the Doctor Who episode The King's Demons. Lindberg showed how much music from around 1600 is still to be discovered.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to his Dowland on lute and notice the silence between the notes: how long does a string ring, and how does the player fill the space with ornaments?
