Gucci Mane

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Gucci Mane, real name Radric Delantic Davis, is an American rapper and music entrepreneur, born on 12 February 1980 in Bessemer, Alabama. At the age of nine he moved with his mother to Atlanta. He began rapping at fourteen. After his first CD, La Flare, which circulated in East Atlanta in an edition of about a thousand copies, he joined the label Big Cat Records.

Music and breakthrough

In 2005 his debut album Trap House appeared, with the single Icy featuring Young Jeezy. The album did well for an independent release. Together with the Atlanta rappers T.I. and Jeezy he is regarded as one of the makers who brought trap music to a large audience in the 2000s. He kept releasing mixtapes and collaborations and signed with Warner Bros. Records. His sixth album The State vs. Radric Davis (2009) was his commercial breakthrough, with the double platinum single Lemonade, and reached the top ten of the Billboard 200.

Influence

Gucci Mane has released sixteen studio albums and seventy-one mixtapes since 2001. In 2007 he founded the label 1017 Records, which signed Young Thug, Waka Flocka Flame, Chief Keef and Pooh Shiesty, among others. He has worked with The Weeknd, Drake and Mariah Carey, among others. His great influence lies in the way he gave trap and new talent a platform.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Lemonade and notice the slow, heavy beat and the loose, almost lazy-sounding way in which he raps. Hear how the chorus sticks in your head.
