Dionne Warwick

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Dionne Warwick is an American singer, actress and television presenter, born in 1940 in East Orange, New Jersey. She grew up in a musical gospel family and as a teenager sang in the group The Gospelaires, an offshoot of the Drinkard Singers of her mother and aunt. In 1962 she began her solo career with the songwriters Burt Bacharach and Hal David, and that became one of the best-known collaborations in pop history. Albums from that period include Presenting Dionne Warwick in 1963, Anyone Who Had a Heart in 1964 and Here Where There Is Love in 1967.

Music and breakthrough

After a falling-out with Bacharach and David and a poorer period at Warner Bros. Records, her career got going again under Clive Davis at Arista, with hits such as I'll Never Love This Way Again, Heartbreaker and That's What Friends Are For. She is among the forty biggest hitmakers on the US Hot 100 between 1955 and 1999 and ranks second among female artists with the most hits in the rock era. She won six Grammys and received a place in, among others, the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the Grammy Hall of Fame.

Influence

Warwick began in gospel and grew into one of the great singers of pop music. Her work with Bacharach and David is a high point of 1960s pop music.
