From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Dillon Francis & Diplo · Dillon Francis was born in 1987 in Los Angeles and is an American producer and DJ. He took an art course, briefly attended Santa Monica College and then left for Atlanta with five hundred dollars, where he worked on music with a friend. After that he returned to Los Angeles to concentrate on DJing. He played a key role in the rise of moombahton and later developed heavier variants, moombahcore and EDM trap.
Music and breakthrough
The breakthrough came when the American producer Diplo noticed him. Together they made Que Que, with vocals by Maluca. His own track Masta Blasta was first a house track at 130 bpm and was reworked into moombahton, inspired by the Dutch DJ Munchi. In 2010 he released the EP Swashbuckler on Play Me Records. In February 2012 he became the first moombahton artist to top the Beatport releases chart, with the EP Something, Something, Awesome. That year he toured North America. He played at major festivals such as Coachella, Ultra and Electric Daisy Carnival, and with Kill the Noise formed the comic duo Meowski666.
Influence
Moombahton is a dance style that slows the tempos of house to the rhythm of Latin American dance music. Dillon Francis showed that such a local scene could seep into the whole of electronic dance music in a short time. He also worked with Diplo, one of the best-known names in DJ culture.
