Dillon Francis

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Dillon Francis is an American electronic producer and DJ, born in 1987 in Los Angeles. He played a key role in popularising moombahton and later developed the heavier variants moombahcore and EDM trap. He took an art course at high school, enrolled briefly at Santa Monica College and then switched to a musical career.

Music and breakthrough

His breakthrough came when Diplo noticed him. That led to the collaboration Que Que with Maluca. His track Masta Blasta was a house track at 130 bpm, which he reworked into moombahton, inspired by the Dutch DJ Munchi. In February 2012 he became the first moombahton artist to top the Beatport releases chart, with the EP Something, Something, Awesome. That year he toured North America and supported Nero and Flux Pavilion. In 2013 the Wurld Turr tour of the United States and Canada followed. His debut album Money Sucks, Friends Rule appeared in 2014, followed later by Wut Wut in 2018, Magic is Real in 2019 and Happy Machine in 2021.

Influence

Francis shows how a new dance style could find a large audience via clubs and festivals.
