Munchi

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Munchi's real name is Rajiv Münch, and he was born in 1989 in Rotterdam, a Dutchman of Dominican descent. He began making music in 2004, when his brother gave him the program Acid Pro. In 2009 he got to know David Heartbreak through MySpace, who invited him to Charlotte after Munchi had mentioned Dave Nada's Moombahton EP. During a tour of the United States in March 2011 he suffered an attack from a brain haemorrhage. Fellow producers such as DJ Ayres, Tittsworth and Dave Nada organised a benefit for the operation and the journey home. He lay in a coma for nine hours and spent eleven days in hospital, and the support helped him recover faster.

Music and breakthrough

Munchi is seen as the maker of the first truly original work within moombahton and as the inventor of moombahcore. Moombahton is a dance genre of which Dave Nada's EP was a starting point. His debut Murda Sound on T&A Records shows his versatility, with many different genres. In December 2010 three of his tracks were on M.I.A.'s mixtape Vicki Leekx, and in July 2012 he appeared with Esta Noche on Azealia Banks' mixtape Fantasea.

Influence

His music shows how a young producer from Rotterdam could break through into a worldwide dance culture via the internet and small labels, with Latin American rhythms as a basis.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sandungueo and notice the slow, heavy rhythm to which the dancers move. Can you hear which instruments carry the rhythm?
