From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Danny Rampling, born in 1961, is an English house DJ who is often named as one of the founders of the British rave and club scene. He began his career in the early 1980s with hip hop, soul and funk in bars and clubs in London. In 1987 he went on holiday to Ibiza with the DJs Paul Oakenfold, Nicky Holloway and Johnny Walker. There they visited the open-air club Amnesia, where they were introduced to the eclectic style of the DJ Alfredo, who among other things played the new house music from the United States.
Music and breakthrough
Back in England, Rampling and his wife at the time, Jenni, tried to recreate the Ibiza feeling with Shoom, England's first Balearic rave club. Shoom ran for three years, beginning in a sports hall in Southwark in London. The club was a springboard for acid house culture and contributed to worldwide dance culture. In 1991 he became the first winner of DJ Magazine's award for best DJ in the world.
Influence
In the early 1990s he had the Saturday-night slot Love Groove Dance Party on the pirate station Kiss. From November 1994 he presented that programme on BBC Radio 1, until March 2002. Only Pete Tong's Essential Selection ran longer. He also formed the band The Millionaire Hippies. In the mid-1990s he also played harder, trancey sets, which he himself called Euro. In that period his album A Voyage Into Trance appeared. According to the sources he sold more than a million compilation albums.
