Charli XCX

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Charli XCX, real name Charlotte Emma Aitchison, is a British singer, songwriter and actress, born in 1992. She began posting songs on Myspace in 2008 and then found her way into the London rave scene. In 2010 she signed with Asylum Records. In 2012 she co-wrote and sang on Icona Pop's I Love It, her first number 1 in the United Kingdom. In 2014 she featured on Iggy Azalea's Fancy and released Boom Clap, her first solo top ten in the United States. Her debut album True Romance from 2013 fell short of expectations.

Music and breakthrough

From 2015 she worked with producers around the British collective PC Music and her music took on a more experimental sound. She released Vroom Vroom in 2016 and the mixtapes Number 1 Angel and Pop 2 in 2017. Charli from 2019 included 1999 with Troye Sivan, and how i'm feeling now from 2020 was made during the coronavirus lockdown. Crash from 2022 became her first number 1 album in the United Kingdom. In 2024 came BRAT, containing 360, which was chosen best album of the year by, among others, Billboard and Rolling Stone and won three Grammys. It set off the so-called Brat Summer.

Influence

Besides her own work she co-wrote songs for others, such as Señorita by Shawn Mendes and Camila Cabello. She shows how pop music can be renewed with club sounds, distortion and a self-assured attitude.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to 360. Notice the tight, electronic beat and the cool, almost indifferent singing, with which the song creates a club atmosphere.
