True Romance
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
True Romance is the debut album by the British singer Charli XCX and was released on 12 April 2013, a year later than planned. The groundwork was laid in 2010, when she met producer Ariel Rechtshaid in Los Angeles. In two hours they wrote Stay Away. With the Swede Patrik Berger she made You're the One. Another beat from that collaboration became I Love It, the song that made Icona Pop an international hit in 2012. Many of the songs had already appeared on the EP You're the One and on two mixtapes. The title refers to the film True Romance and, according to her, is about a raw, honest view of her love life.
The album sounds like synth-pop with dark, gothic colours. Critics were mostly positive: Pitchfork praised the mix of 1980s synth-pop, girl groups and modern producers, while NME found the record monotonous in the long run.
