100 gecs

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

100 gecs is an American duo made up of Dylan Brady and Laura Les, who started out in 2015 in the St. Louis area. They first made music together in the winter of 2015, in Laura's apartment in Chicago, and released their first EP themselves in 2016. They have told several contradictory stories about where the name comes from. A breakthrough came in 2019, when they played a DJ set together at the Minecraft Fire Festival and then carried on writing.

Music and breakthrough

The debut album 1000 gecs was released in May 2019 to positive reviews. One critic called it hyperpop in its most extreme form: trap beats processed almost to destruction, exaggerated emo singing and streams of lightning-fast arpeggios. In 2020 came the remix album 1000 gecs and the Tree of Clues, with contributions from A. G. Cook, Charli XCX and Injury Reserve, among others. That same year they signed to Atlantic Records. The second album, 10,000 gecs, appeared in 2023. Brady also produced for other artists, such as Rico Nasty.

Influence

Their music is wild and yet catchy. Styles collide within a few seconds: ska, metal, trap, dance and pop. In doing so they helped shape the genre of hyperpop, which in the 2020s had a major influence on young pop makers.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Money Machine, the track that A. G. Cook remixed in 2019, and notice how quickly the sounds change. Try counting how many different styles you hear in a single minute.
