A. G. Cook

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

A. G. Cook, born Alexander Guy Cook in 1990, is an English producer. He is the son of two architects and studied music at Goldsmiths in London. There he played with his friend Danny L Harle in the project Dux Content, which experimented with rhythms and time signatures. In 2013 he founded the label PC Music, which set out to bring in people who do not usually make music and treated them like artists on a major record label.

Music and breakthrough

His first solo single, Keri Baby from 2014, uses pop clichés and distorted voices to make singer Hannah Diamond sound like a digital figure on a screen. Beautiful, from the same year, is a parody of Eurodance, with high, pitch-shifted voices. With Sophie he made Hey QT. Later he became executive producer for Charli XCX, on the albums Charli and How I'm Feeling Now, among others, as well as Brat. For Brat he won a Grammy. In 2022 he contributed to a track on Beyoncé's Renaissance. His own albums are 7G and Apple from 2020 and Britpop from 2024.

Influence

The exaggerated pop sounds of PC Music became the foundation of hyperpop, a genre that Cook developed and popularised. In doing so he showed that an artificial, almost mocking pop style can move you just as much as the real thing.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Beautiful and notice the wound-up voice and the squeaking, bubbling sounds. See whether you hear the track as a joke, or whether it sweeps you along against your will.
