She broke through internationally by winning the Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland in 1988 with Ne partez pas sans moi. She then made twelve English-language albums, including The Colour of My Love in 1993, Falling Into You in 1996, Let's Talk About Love in 1997 and A New Day Has Come in 2002.

Music and breakthrough

She became known for theme songs for films: Beauty and the Beast for the Disney film from 1991, Because You Loved Me for Up Close & Personal in 1996 and My Heart Will Go On for Titanic in 1997, one of the best-selling singles ever. In between the English albums she continued to release French-language records. D'eux from 1995 became the best-selling French-language album. As a live performer she held the Let's Talk About Love tour and the residency A New Day in Las Vegas, the most lucrative concert series at a single venue. In 2022 she cancelled her Courage World Tour after a diagnosis of stiff-person syndrome.

Influence

Dion is called the Queen of Power Ballads. She is known for powerful, technically accomplished singing and is the best-selling Canadian artist and the best-selling French-language artist. She won five Grammy Awards and twenty Juno Awards.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to My Heart Will Go On and notice how the singing begins softly, almost whispering, and gradually grows. Hear the modulation that makes the final chorus sound a step higher still.
