Carmen Twillie
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Carmen Twillie is an American actress and singer. She is a good friend of Tommy Morgan and appeared as guest alto soloist with his choir. She is best known as the voice singing Circle of Life at the beginning of the Disney film The Lion King from 1994, a song by Elton John and Tim Rice.
Music and breakthrough
She also sang Stormella in the Christmas film Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer: The Movie from 1998 and was one of the singers in Cats Don't Dance from 1997. In the stop-motion film The Nightmare Before Christmas from 1993 she voiced a few minor roles. She also worked on an episode of the series Chowder.
Influence
Twillie is also a backing singer and sang on albums by Celine Dion, Whitney Houston, Dionne Warwick and Pink Floyd, for the album A Momentary Lapse of Reason from 1987. In this way her voice can be heard on many records, even when her name is not on the front. That fits the work of backing singers, who contribute a great deal to the sound of pop and film without being the face of the record.
