Bob Moses

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Bob Moses is a Canadian electronic music duo based in Vancouver, which formed in New York. It consists of the singer Tom Howie and the producer Jimmy Vallance. Both went to the same school in Vancouver, but hardly knew each other. After school Vallance moved to New York and made trance and progressive house, with releases on Ultra Records and remixes for Sia. Howie spent a year at the Berklee College of Music in Boston, also came to New York and played in a rock band. They found each other again in the car park of a hardware store and began making music together in Howie's apartment, with rock from Howie's past and trance from Vallance's.

Music and breakthrough

The name Bob Moses was suggested by Francis Harris of the label Scissor and Thread, after the New York city planner Robert Moses. Their first EP Hands to Hold appeared in October 2012, followed by Far from the Tree, and in March 2014 they signed with Domino Records. The debut album Days Gone By came out on 18 September 2015, with Tearing Me Up as its best-known song. A remix of it by RAC won a Grammy Award for best remixed recording. Later came Battle Lines in 2018, Desire in 2020, The Silence in Between in 2022 and BLINK in 2025.

Influence

Bob Moses shows how house and rock can go together: electronic beats with a singer who has a real songwriter's voice. In this way they stand between the dance floor and the radio, and with Tearing Me Up they also reached the alternative radio chart in the United States.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tearing Me Up from Days Gone By (2015) and notice the beat under the vocals. Notice how the electronic accompaniment and the voice of a rock singer complement each other.
