Baauer

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Baauer is the stage name of Harry Bauer Rodrigues, an American producer and DJ, born in 1989 in Philadelphia. He grew up in Germany, London and Connecticut and was already making dance music at the age of thirteen. Earlier he released a track under the name Captain Harry, which was supported by BBC Radio 1. Around 2012 his first releases belonged to an emerging movement in electronic music, trap, alongside TNGHT, RL Grime, Rustie and Flosstradamus.

Music and breakthrough

His first official single Harlem Shake came out in May 2012 free on SoundCloud, on Mad Decent's label Jeffrees. Rustie first played the track in a mix for BBC Radio 1. Later it became a viral video craze on YouTube, when thousands of fans, artists and brands made their own dance videos. After a rule change by Billboard in 2013, Harlem Shake became the first number one in the United States to chart purely through streaming. His first EP Dum Dum came out in 2012, followed by ß in 2014. In 2016 the debut album Aa appeared. The second album Planet's Mad from 2020 received a Grammy nomination for best dance or electronic album.

Influence

Baauer also produced for Just Blaze, Pusha T, Tom Morello and G-Dragon and made remixes for Missy Elliott, Disclosure and Gorillaz, among others. His music is heard in films such as Logan and Red Sparrow. With Harlem Shake he showed that a piece of electronic music can spread faster through internet culture than through radio.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Harlem Shake. Notice the heavy bass and the hard, jolting rhythms, and how little is needed to make a track stick in the mind.
