Alfred Newman

Alfred Newman werd in 1900 in New Haven geboren als oudste van tien kinderen en speelde al jong piano in theaters. Hij dirigeerde op Broadway en kwam in 1930 naar Hollywood. Zijn melodie voor Street Scene (1931), een jazzy portret van de stad, werd later steeds opnieuw gebruikt. Hij schreef de bekende fanfare van 20th Century Fox en leidde vanaf 1940 de muziekafdeling van die studio. Samen met geluidstechnici ontwikkelde hij een warme, glanzende strijkersklank, de Newman-sound. Newman won negen Oscars, meer dan enige andere filmcomponist. Hij schreef onder meer Wuthering Heights (1939), The Song of Bernadette (1943) en The Robe (1953). Zijn zonen Thomas en David en zijn neef Randy werden ook filmcomponisten.
