Thomas Newman

Thomas Newman werd in 1955 geboren als zoon van filmcomponist Alfred Newman. Hij studeerde aan Yale. Zijn stijl verschilt sterk van die van zijn vader. Hij bouwt muziek uit kleine, herhalende patronen van piano, marimba, tabla, hakkebord en elektronica, vaak met ongewone speeltechnieken. In The Shawshank Redemption (1994) gebruikt hij daarnaast warme strijkers voor de hoop van de gevangenen. Het pianothema met percussie uit American Beauty (1999) werd eindeloos nagevolgd. Voor Pixar schreef hij Finding Nemo (2003) en WALL-E (2008). Ook in de Bondfilm Skyfall (2012) en de oorlogsfilm 1917 (2019) is zijn klank herkenbaar. Hij werd vele keren voor een Oscar genomineerd.
