…and Then I Wrote

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

…and Then I Wrote · At first Willie Nelson wrote his songs for others. After his own records on D Records came to nothing, he sold songs, and Family Bible became a hit for Claude Gray in 1960. In Nashville he signed as a songwriter with Pamper Music, and Hello Walls, Night Life and Crazy became hits for Faron Young, Ray Price and Patsy Cline. He then signed with Liberty Records.

Producer Joe Allison let him sing in his own way. The recording began in August 1962 in Nashville and was finished in September in Los Angeles, with guitarists such as Billy Strange and Roy Nichols. The debut contains many songs that others had already made famous. The biggest hit was Touch Me, a slow, sad blues with vocal harmonies, which reached number 7 on the Billboard country chart. AllMusic gave the album four out of five stars.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Crazy and notice how his voice gives the rhythm of the melody a loose twist of its own.
