So Much Guitar!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Wes Montgomery recorded So Much Guitar! for Riverside Records, where the album was released in 1961. Orrin Keepnews produced the session and Ray Fowler was the engineer. The guitarist played with a rhythm section of pianist Hank Jones, bassist Ron Carter and drummer Lex Humphries, supplemented by Ray Barretto on congas. That last addition gives the record a rhythmic colour of its own.

The programme mixes original work, such as Twisted Blues, with pieces by Duke Ellington, Neal Hefti and Harold Arlen. The eight performances last from just over two to almost eight minutes. Critics later regarded the record as one of the guitarist's best recordings. Scott Yanow called all eight performances memorable in their own way, and PopMatters spoke of one of the most beautiful records you can put in your player.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to One for My Baby (And One More for the Road), at almost eight minutes the longest track. Notice how the guitar carries the melody and how the band plays calmly around it.
