Movin' Along

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Movin' Along is an album by the American jazz guitarist Wes Montgomery and was released in April 1961 on Riverside. The producer was Orrin Keepnews. Alongside Montgomery play James Clay on flute and tenor saxophone, pianist Victor Feldman, bassist Sam Jones and drummer Louis Hayes. On three pieces, Tune-Up, Sandu and Body and Soul, Montgomery plays a tenor guitar.

The repertoire consists of two of Montgomery's own pieces, Movin' Along and So Do It!, and pieces by Miles Davis, Clifford Brown and Sam Jones, alongside the standard Body and Soul. The album was later reissued in the Original Jazz Classics series, with two extra recordings, and is included in the box set The Complete Riverside Recordings. Scott Yanow wrote on AllMusic that Montgomery made many of his best jazz recordings for Riverside, and that this is an often overlooked gem.

Listening tip. Listen to Body and Soul and notice how Montgomery plays a familiar melody and how he builds his solo.
