Golden Quartet

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Golden Quartet was recorded in 2000 and released on Tzadik Records. It was the first record by the quartet of that name, led by trumpeter and flugelhorn player Wadada Leo Smith. Anthony Davis plays piano, Malachi Favors bass and Jack DeJohnette drums. The album contains five pieces, often dedicated to someone: DeJohnette to the drummer, Harumi to Harumi Makino Smith, and Celestial Sky and All the Magic is a memorial piece for Lester Bowie.

AllMusic called it his strongest record as a bandleader in a long time and his best for Tzadik. The Penguin Guide to Jazz wrote that in Celestial Sky and All the Magic he again shows how much he owes to Miles Davis, but also how far beyond him he has since come.

Listening

Listening tip. In Celestial Sky and All the Magic, listen to the trumpet and notice what you recognise of Miles Davis.
