Light Upon Light

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Light Upon Light was released in 1999 in the Composer Series of Tzadik Records. It is the second album that trumpeter Wadada Leo Smith recorded for that label. It contains five pieces in widely differing forms: a composition for chamber ensemble and gamelan quartet, a solo piece for viola, a double bass concerto that he wrote for Bert Turetzky and two electronic pieces. In the first piece, Moths, Flames and the Giant Sequoia Redwood Trees, gamelan instruments such as gender, kempul and gong ageng are heard, and he plays kenong himself. In Multiamerica and A Thousand Cranes, a memorial piece for Amir Hamzehi, he plays trumpet with electronics by Mark Trayle.

AllMusic wrote that the album is more spacious and a little colder than his first for Tzadik, Tao-Njia.

Listening

Listening tip. In Multiamerica, listen to how the trumpet combines with electronics and spoken poetry.
