Kulture Jazz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Kulture Jazz is a solo album by the American trumpeter and composer Wadada Leo Smith. He recorded it in October 1992, and it was released a year later on ECM. It was his second record for that label, after Divine Love from 1979. Smith stands completely alone in the studio. He plays trumpet, flugelhorn, koto, mbira, harmonica, a bamboo notched flute and percussion, and he also sings himself.

The reception was glowing. AllMusic reviewer Eugene Chadbourne felt that ECM does Smith better justice here than ever, and he praised how the record presents folk, blues, jazz and creative music as related forms. A reviewer for Jazz Desk compared the album to someone building his own house or boat or sewing his own clothes. The music is very personal and at times has an almost meditative quality.
