Confessions

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Confessions is Usher's fourth studio album and was released on 23 March 2004 on Arista Records. The recording ran from 2003 to 2004. Jermaine Dupri produced many of the tracks, together with Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and Lil Jon, among others. When the album seemed finished, Usher and label boss L.A. Reid felt that one or two songs were still missing. Red Light and Yeah! came out of that.

The title refers to the personal subject matter. Burn is about the end of a relationship, Confessions Part II about a deceitful affair. The album is mainly R&B, with hip hop and crunk running through it, and shows Usher as a crooner. In the first week, 1.1 million copies were sold. The album won a Grammy for Best Contemporary R&B Album and is on Rolling Stone's list of the 500 greatest albums.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Yeah! and notice how Lil Jon's hard crunk beat contrasts with Usher's smooth vocals.
