8701

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

8701 is Usher's third album and was released in the summer of 2001 on Arista Records. It was actually supposed to be called All About U and to come out at the end of 2000, but when several tracks leaked on Napster, the release was postponed. The singer recorded new songs in Los Angeles, New York, Minneapolis and Atlanta, including with The Neptunes, Jermaine Dupri and Babyface. The title refers to 1987, when he first sang in church, and to 2001.

His models were Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and Michael Jackson. The songs are about love and heartbreak. U Remind Me and U Got It Bad both reached number one on the American Hot 100, and U Don't Have to Call reached the top three. Critics praised the singing and the singer's development, although they were less enthusiastic about some of the material.
