My Way
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
My Way · Usher's 1994 debut album sold modestly, and later he said that it did not suit him. For the follow-up he sought a rawer and more authentic sound and wanted more input of his own. The label LaFace first brought in Dallas Austin, but shelved those recordings. In the end, label boss L.A. Reid sent him to Jermaine Dupri, who became the album's main producer. In addition, Usher worked with Babyface and with Monica and Lil' Kim.
My Way was released in 1997 and became his breakthrough in R&B. The reviews were mostly positive: critics praised his singing and the production, although some found the quality uneven and the record too full of slow songs. Three singles became hits: You Make Me Wanna..., Nice & Slow and the title song. To promote it, he opened for Mary J. Blige and Janet Jackson.
