Here I Stand

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Here I Stand was released on 13 May 2008 on LaFace Records. Usher recorded many ballads, inspired by his wife Tameka Foster and his son. Before the recording he had replaced his mother as manager with Benny Medina. In January 2008 his father died, with whom he had had a difficult relationship. The working title was Measure of a Man, but Clay Aiken had already used that name. According to the singer, Here I Stand marked a new chapter in his life.

Six tracks were released as singles. Love in This Club, with Young Jeezy, topped the Billboard Hot 100. Prayer for You is an interlude for his son about the relationship with his own father. Critics saw growth and maturity; others found the style less convincing after Confessions. The album debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 with 433,000 copies sold in the first week. It also topped the chart in Canada, the United Kingdom and Australia.
