Achtung Baby

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Achtung Baby · After the criticism of Rattle and Hum, the band from Dublin felt creatively stuck and looked for new paths. In October 1990 they began at Hansa Studios in Berlin, with Daniel Lanois as producer, Brian Eno as adviser and Flood as engineer. Berlin, after the fall of the Wall, was supposed to inspire them, but the atmosphere in the city was disappointing. The members quarrelled about the direction: Bono and The Edge were listening to electronic dance music and industrial, while Larry Mullen and Adam Clayton preferred the old sound. The group even considered splitting up, until One emerged from an improvisation. The record was then finished in Dublin.

The sound is harder, darker and more ironic than before, with influences from alternative rock, industrial and dance. Achtung Baby received good reviews, topped the American chart and was followed by the Zoo TV Tour.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to One and notice how calm and restrained the song is, after all the searching for a new sound.
