Rattle and Hum
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Rattle and Hum is a mixture of live recordings and new studio tracks, released on 10 October 1988 together with a documentary by director Phil Joanou. The album grew out of the Joshua Tree Tour, on which the band immersed themselves in American roots: blues, folk and gospel. Jimmy Iovine produced. Some of the tracks were recorded at Sun Studio in Memphis, where Elvis Presley and Johnny Cash also recorded.
The record opens with a live version of Helter Skelter by the Beatles. In Desire you hear a Bo Diddley beat, in When Love Comes to Town B. B. King plays and sings along, and I Still Haven't Found What I'm Looking For was recorded live with a gospel choir. The critical response was divided: some critics felt that the band wanted to place itself among its great examples.
