Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers · The debut was released in November 1976 on Shelter Records. The band recorded and mixed it at Shelter Studio in Hollywood. The album received little attention in the United States. Only after a British tour did it climb to number 24 on the British album chart, and Anything That's Rock 'n' Roll became a hit there.
Breakdown was the first single and reached the American top 40. American Girl grew into one of the group's most recognisable songs. After almost a year and many good reviews, the album also reached the American charts in 1978, where it peaked at number 55 and later went gold. Robert Christgau found the songs pleasant and the riffs dynamically performed. The album appears in the book 1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die.
