Hard Promises
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Hard Promises is the fourth studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and was released on 5 May 1981 on Backstreet Records. The working title was Benmont's Revenge, after the keyboard player Benmont Tench. Jimmy Iovine and Petty produced it. Stevie Nicks sings on Insider, a duet, and the title comes from that song's chorus.
The release was delayed by a dispute with the distributor MCA over the price: the label wanted to charge a dollar more than usual. Petty protested in the press, many fans supported him, and in the end MCA dropped the price increase. During the recording sessions John Lennon was supposed to visit the same studio, but he was murdered before the visit. The band had We Love You J.L. engraved in the run-out groove of early pressings. Bassist Ron Blair left the band after this album, which is the last full record with the original line-up.
