Long After Dark
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Long After Dark is the fifth studio album by Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers and was released on 2 November 1982 on Backstreet Records. Jimmy Iovine and Petty produced it. It was the first record with Howie Epstein on bass and backing vocals. His voice can be heard throughout the album and from then on became a fixed part of the band's sound.
You Got Lucky became a hit on MTV. Change of Heart, like that song, reached the American top forty, and Straight into Darkness was also released as a single. A number of tracks from the sessions stayed on the shelf for a long time. Two of them, Keep a Little Soul and Keeping Me Alive, did not come out until years later, on the box set An American Treasure, among other places. In 2024 an expanded deluxe edition appeared with twelve live and unreleased tracks.
