Private Dancer

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

After her split from Ike Turner, Tina Turner struggled to get a solo career off the ground. In 1983, Capitol A&R man John Carter signed her, despite resistance within the label. Private Dancer was her first album for Capitol. Four production teams worked on it, including Rupert Hine and Martyn Ware of Heaven 17, in various studios in England.

The sound was a break with the rhythm and blues of her years with Ike. The record mixes up-tempo songs and ballads from pop and rock, with a touch of smooth jazz and contemporary R&B. The title song was written by Mark Knopfler and features a guitar solo by Jeff Beck. Terry Britten produced What's Love Got to Do with It, which has a reggae tinge. Critics praised her raw but powerful voice and saw a strong comeback. It became a worldwide success and won four Grammys. The New York Times called it a milestone in the development of pop-soul.

Listening tip. Listen to Private Dancer and notice how her voice keeps cutting through the glossy production, and wait for Jeff Beck's guitar solo.
