More Specials
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
More Specials · After the success of the debut, Jerry Dammers took charge of the Specials and wanted to move away from ska. He became fascinated by muzak and lounge music, which he had heard in hotel bars and lifts while touring America. Recording in the summer of 1980 took place in Coventry, with Dammers himself as producer. The album was built up mainly in the studio, one instrument at a time. This caused tension: the members had different tastes, from northern soul to rockabilly, and the band largely fell apart in 1981.
The result is eclectic. Side one contains ska, northern soul and reggae, and the album opens and closes with Enjoy Yourself (It's Later Than You Think). Side two has the muzak atmosphere. The lyrics are often bleak and political, but with humour. The album reached number five in England and was later cited as an influence on trip hop.
