Some Girls

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Some Girls · Around 1976 the popularity of the Rolling Stones was declining: disco and new rock bands dominated, and punk made everything from the sixties seem outdated. Keith Richards also had legal problems after his arrest in Toronto. In Paris the Stones recorded this album at the Pathé Marconi Studios between October 1977 and February 1978. It was the first with Ronnie Wood as a permanent band member, whose slide guitar fitted well with Richards's playing.

Mick Jagger was the main creative force. He drew inspiration from punk and disco, and from New York. He wrote Miss You entirely on his own, with blues harmonica by Sugar Blue. That song became number one in the United States. Beast of Burden also became a hit. Critics saw the record as a return to form, the best since Exile on Main St.

Listening

Listening tip. In Miss You, listen to Sugar Blue's harmonica. How does this instrument fit into a song with a danceable influence?
